Hi friends! I know I’ve talked to y’all before about why I feed my dogs vegan dog food; but in case you’re new here, my reasons, surprisingly, DO NOT simply revolve around my own practice of ethical veganism. Of course I don’t want animals to die for any type of food. But, for instance, if I had a cat, I would not feed them a vegan diet. To my understanding, cats are obligate carnivores, and for that reason it is my opinion that it would not be kind to impose my own dietary preferences onto them.
But dogs! Dogs can and do absolutely thrive on a healthy, balanced plant-based diet. In fact, the once longest-living dog in the world, Bramble, was vegan!
Additionally, regular old meat-based dog food you’ll find on store shelves may legally contain “4-D” meat: meat from dead, dying, diseased and disabled animals. Oftentims, these dog food brands also include mill floor sweepings (which they call “grain”) cheap fillers like corn contaminated with levels of pesticides so high that they have been deemed unfit for human consumption. I love my dogs so much. If I wouldn’t eat it, I’m not going to have them eat it.
So, for the past few years I have looked to ethical, healthy, plant-based dog food brands as an alternative. And my dogs LOVE it, and they are incredibly healthy! Every time I take my dogs into the vet (a large group practice, so my dogs see a different veterinarian nearly every time), they want to know what my dogs are eating to keep them so lean and strong with such shiny coats. Matt and I always laugh and quote this one vet with a really thick Texan accent who exclaimed “so shiiiny, all ‘em!”
The past few months, my doggies have been absolutely THRIVING on Wild Earth dog food, which I initially saw on Shark Tank a year or so ago. What drew me in and made me want to try it: 31% complete protein; superfood ingredients; no hormones, antibiotics, or artificial preservatives/flavors/colors; contains omega 3s for healthy skin and coats; has ALL 10 essential amino acids dogs need! It’s like… the perfect freakin’ dog food. My almost-two-year-old River will pick a piece of Wild Earth kibble off the ground and pop it in his mouth on occasion (toddlers, omg) and– while I do take it away from him if I have the chance– I don’t sweat it really, because there aren’t any nasties in this dog food! And bonus: Wild Earth is great for picky eaters! My youngest baby, Banksie, is the pickiest eater in the world, and she gobbles this stuff up!
It’s a weird time right now, to say the least. We are all housebound and socially isolated with the Covid_19 outbreak, and we aren’t the only ones who are less active. Less walks, dog park visits, and social outings for the dogs can take a toll on their health, as well. It’s so important to me that they are getting the absolute best nutrition available now more than ever, so I’m extra thankful for Wild Earth’s vegan dog food. Love you all! Stay safe, be well, love your families (furry and non) hard!
