list of recommended products from our instagram live sesh

Hey guys!  Thank you to the couple hundred of you who joined in for an impromptu, early morning “live session” with me yesterday on Instagram!  It was fun to discuss all of the cruelty-free products in my bathroom and to be super honest with you without there being any sponsorship involved.  Extra thanks to those who contributed to the conversation with your own favorite, cruelty-free beauty products… I have ordered a couple of them to try!

I am going to keep this post short and sweet– but as promised, I wanted to provide you with links to all of the best products that we discussed, along with a “Cliff’s Notes” type reminder of what it is, how much it costs, and why I like it.   Let me know if you have any additional questions or if you need help deciding between products based on your skin type, etc… I am ALWAYS here to help!  Thanks for being ethical and caring about animals, beauties.

Eva NYC shampoo and conditioner:  $… comes in big bottles with a pump, I keep this in my bathroom for guests because it gets the job done and doesn’t break the bank.

Paul Mitchell thermal protectant: $… I try to support products by by them because they pulled out the plan to retail in China in order to retain their cruelty-free status. I put this product in my hair before using a blow dryer or curling iron.

Living Proof “perfect hair day” trio:  $$… Makes your blowout last all week long, seriously. Its a splurge but worth it when you know you’re about to have a busy, important week. You need to use the shampoo, conditioner, and then once you’re out of the shower you follow it up with the styling treatment.

Olaplex at home treatment: $$… The only reason my hair hasn’t all fried off after all of my color changes!  I sleep with it in my hair about once every couple of weeks.

Tressa Watercolors color deposit shampoo: $.. Great for color maintenance! I never had to touch up my red color while using this product. Whatever your color is, there is a match for you. I mixed it 1 to 1 with my preferred shampoo.

Colure Hair Care: $$… Use this brand if you have tape-in extensions!  They will never make your “weave” slide out 🙂

Le Labo: $$$ pricey but stays on ALL day and you can name your own fragrance. I keep mine in the fridge so it’s extra refreshing to put on, and I wear LYS 41.

Nail polish:

Zoya: $, take awhile to chip off, almost 350 colors to choose from!

Nail polish remover:

LA Color pads: $, fruit-scented, super easy and portable. I like the lemon-scent.

Body Lotion:

Kiss My Face: $… Super moisturizing, love the coconut smell the most, huge bottle and lasts forever.

OZ Naturals: $$… Has macadamia nut oil.. Really doesn’t have a scent, so it’s ideal if you want your perfume to be a standalone.

Crystal: $… THE ONLY NATURAL DEO THAT HAS WORKED FOR ME… It comes in lots of scent options, but I prefer the unscented.  Quick note: it does contain “potassium alum” which is a natural mineral salt, but still a type of aluminum. However, based on my admittedly limited knowledge of science, the molecules are too large to penetrate the skin, so this type of alum does not put you at risk. I wanted to mention it anyhow!

Piper Wei: $$… So many of my friends love this, but it just didn’t work for me anymore after using it for a week or so.  Could be my specific body chemistry, though, because like I mentioned, so many people love it!  You apply with your fingertips, though… Which also wasn’t my fave.

Meyer’s… $… I love the lemon scent, and the bottle lasts a long time.  Very affordable.

Sun protection:

Elta MD: $$… I am addicted to their facial sunscreen. It won’t break you out, and is a good base for makeup. The dermatologists I work with LOVE this product.

Kiss My face oil spray: $… Good for body.

Sun Bum sticks: good to keep in your handbags/beach bags, tiny, can easily take on an airplane. Can go on the face, but I still recommend Elta MD if you have acne-prone skin.

Dry Shampoo:

Eva NYC: $… I prefer it to Psssst brand because it is less expensive and has a better scent.

Skincare for face:

Osea Malibu: $$… My ride-or-die products, I especially cannot live without their facial cleanser or their advanced protection cream (anti-aging night cream!). Makes my skin look and feel so youthful and fresh and clean. ADDICTED. WORTH EVERY PENNY. I so appreciate the glass, eco-friendly packaging, as well. Great for acne prone or sensitive skin.

LXMI: $$… If you’re into mega hydration, get this luxury product that starts as a balm and then turns to facial oil. Helps marginalized women earn a decent wage, fair-trade, organic.

Beauty Counter: $$… This company prides themselves on products without dangerous chemicals and additives. I love their rose water facial mist and their plumping + jasmine facial oil. PS: if you have a kid, their stuff for children is evidently great!

Body Soap:

Everyone Soap: $$… Comes in a huge container or 2 pack, so it lasts a long time…My main use for this is as a bubble bath, but it can also be a shower gel… Lavender scent is my favorite

Shea Moisture “african black” body wash: $… I like this for the shower, luxurious-feeling and a good scent for men, too, in case you are co-habitating.

Beauty Counter charcoal body bar: I keep this next to the bath, has detoxing qualities, cool minimal look. Good for men, too.

Everything, from makeup to soaps to shampoos:

LUSH!!!!!  I am particularly obsessed with their bath bombs, but I basically treat this store as a one-stop-shop for everything cruelty-free.

**Quick reminder: you can always check on the cruelty-free status of a brand by referring to Logical Harmony’s list, which is updated weekly!

LXMI : vegan, fair trade, and luxurious skincare

Spoiler alert:  LXMI is a game changer.

I remember when I first decided to cut out all products which had been tested on animals, I was pretty sad about losing certain luxury skincare products.  La Mer moisturizer, for instance, while outrageously expensive, had never failed to made me look and feel like a million bucks.  Until now, I had chalked that loss up to an “oh well, nothing else will be quite THAT good, but being cruelty-free is obviously way more important.”   But now, things have changed.

Meet : your old favorite skincare product’s more beautiful, more ethical, AND more affordable counterpart!  LXMI, now available at Sephora. I can barely contain my excitement as I write to tell you guys about her.

LXMI secret weapon:  Nilotica Reserve.  This is an “organic, cold pressed skin superfood” which achieves incredible results without all the synthetic gunk.  If you want to get more detailed about it– it is a butter extracted from the fruits of East Africa’s nilotica tree nuts, which goes on velvety soft and then transforms into a vitamin A & E-rich oil.  It penetrates deeply into the skin and prevents signs of aging– fine lines are greatly deducted, and your skin feels and appears amazingly hydrated. This is due to LXMI’s nilotica reserve having +25% more essential fatty acids than traditional beauty oils. A more rare and exotic relative of shea, it is harvested seasonally from 20-year-old trees at the Nile.  For more info on this luxurious, hard-to-get ingredient, go HERE

LXMI ethics: the Nilotica Reserve is harvested by marginalized women in the Nile Valley.  LXMI prioritizes health and is 100% organic.  A very transparent company, they take pride in being fair-trade– if you’d like to meet some of the LXMI harvesters, click HERE. The products are 100% vegan and never animal-tested.

LXMI on you: These products truly smell incredible.  My fiancé asked me what is was that I had on, and said he really loved the scent.  My favorite product is their Pure Nilotica Melt Nourishing Balm-to-Oil I apply it and leave it on overnight, but I also add touchups throughout the day to my chin and under my eyes… basically, anywhere that feels dry and could use some extra hydration.  It leaves your skin looking luminous and youthful, not oily.

subscription box : vegan cuts

Subscription boxes are all the rage these days, obviously.   People order these in order to have a new monthly stash of bows for their kid, toys for their dog, makeup for their face, plants for their garden– you name it.   I’ve never gotten very involved in all of that, as I’m trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to live a bit more minimalistic, material-wise.  However,  I am discovering that I cannot say no to the monthly Vegan Cuts boxes.

They have the snack box, which is what I tried this month.  It contained drinks, cookies, snacks… You name it.  ALL vegan, mostly fair-trade and organic.  I especially love this because my fiancé is slowly going more and more vegan, and I really love to have as much variety around the house as possible for him to snack on, which shows him how totally unrestrictive the lifestyle can be.  Additionally, the box has introduced me to some of my very favorite pantry staples!   So, whether you are new-ish to being vegan or vegetarian, whether you are an omnivore who simply likes snacks, or whether you’ve been vegan for years and just want to add new and fun snack items to your rotation, I highly recommend this monthly box.

(Pssst!  They also offer a beauty/cosmetics/skincare box!

Go check them out, let me know what you think!

my cruelty-free products picks! plus, what you can do to help.

You gotta be careful out there.  I remember when I first went animal-friendly/cruelty-free…  I was at the mall and approached the Estée Lauder makeup counter.  “Hi!  Y’all have a foundation I’m obsessed with and I just ran out, but I need to please speak with someone who knows if you test on animals.”

The saleswoman’s eye’s widened and she gasped “Oh, my God! Do people even still do that, test on animals?! So barbaric.  We haven’t done that since the ’80s, and we never would.”

“Ok!” Happy with her emphatic answer, I paid an exorbitant amount of money for my favorite foundation, and went on my way.

Fast forward a few months where I had become more savvy navigating the vegan/cruelty-free world, and I was SHOCKED to learn how sneaky (and sometimes just flat out uninformed) cosmetics companies and their workers can be.  Straight up: I was duped.  Estée Lauder’s official statement regarding their animal testing policy reads as follows: The Estée Lauder Companies does not test on animals and we never ask others to do so on our behalf. If a regulatory body demands it for its safety or regulatory assessment, an exception can be made.”  The red flag lies in the second sentence.  The most profitable market to sell makeup is China, and guess what? In order to retail in China, by Chinese law you HAVE to test on animals.  So most big-name cosmetics/hygiene brands do, in fact, choose to test on animals.  And just so everyone is on the same page– and this will matter to some people more or less than others– contrary to popular belief, animal testing does not involve a mouse in a cage.  Beagles… Yes, the dogs… And cats, and bunnies, and monkeys are typically the victims.  They will pour laundry detergent in a dog’s mouth, for instance, so see how much he/she can ingest without dying.  Or they’ll blind a cat so see how much mascara you can shove into your eye.  It’s INSANE and heartbreaking and so, so archaic.

The bright side?? You can be a part of the SOLUTION!

  1. Download the Cruelty Cutter app!  It is a handy tool you can use while shopping to determine which products/ brands are animal-friendly.  Simply scan the barcode and the info pops up!  Here’s the deal… Every time you shop you cast a vote, via every dollar you spend, for what kind of world you want to live in.  This app helps you vote kindly and wisely.
  2. Do your research! I choose to follow cruelty-free makeup bloggers to get my facts straight.  The most thorough blogger is Logical Harmony (@logicalharmony on IG)– she checks up on the brands every single week and updates her cruelty-free list!  You’d be surprised how often these companies change their verbiage on their testing policies.
  3. Check out and give your support to organizations who set out to rescue and rehabilitate these victimized animals, as well as those organizations who work to expose the cruelty involved in animal testing.  One of my very favorites is the Beagle Freedom Project.

Hopefully you feel at least slightly empowered now… You really can make a difference.  The world is changing right now more than every before, as it pertains to animal rights and welfare… I feel it and see it every day and it gives me goosebumps. Won’t it be cool, when animal testing is abolished for good, to look back say “I helped. I was on the right side of history.”

In the meantime, I’m going to list some of my favorite cruelty-free products here.  Enjoy!

Budget: e.l.f

Splurge: Kat Von D (LOVE all her products! And I love to support her, because KVD is a celebrity who has really used her platform to make change for animals.  She has heroically decided not to retail in China, and has reformulated her lipsticks to be completely vegan.)

Nail polish:

This was a hard one for me to figure out, not going to lie.  But I finally found a product I’m in love with an that works for me: Crystal Roll-on.

Budget: Kiss My Face (especially for face wash, moisturizer, and sunscreen)

Splurge: Osea Malibu (OBSESSEDDDDDD WITH THEM!!!!!!!!!! Fav products are the gel cleanser and their advanced protection creme… I wear it every night.)

Body wash:

Shea Moisure African Black (good scent for both men and women)

Budget: On major sale right now is Eve NYC… Very clean smell, makes my hair feel soft.

Splurge: Living Proof products (I like to buy the “Perfect Hair Day trio… Your hairstyle will be in place for days, it is CRAZY! But the other formulations, like their anti-frizz, are great, too.)

Detergent (dish and laundry) and cleaning supplies:

Seventh Generation! I live and die by this brand and their eco-friendly mission.

As always, friends, never hesitate to contact me with any questions!! I love to help. XO have a fun weekend!  Thank you for caring about animals.

osea malibu- the only skincare i trust!

Did you know that our skin is our body’s largest (and most absorbent) organ??  Whatever we apply to it only takes 26 seconds to go directly into our bloodstream… So you better be aware of what is in your products!  It is extremely important to invest in skincare that not only works, but is actually good for you.  I work in dermatology offices every day, and I could have my pick of any fancy face wash/moisturizer/you name it… For free.  But I choose OSEA MALIBU every. single. time.  Yes, Osea products are vegan, organic, and cruelty-free, but just as important: they are free of harsh chemicals and toxins.

I often get asked about my skincare regimen, so I am going to walk you through it.  Let me know if you have any questions at all!

PS: I HAVE A GIFT FOR YOU! If you want to try any of the products that I use below, enter in code FASHIONVEGGIE at checkout for free shipping!! Yayyyy, I love when things are free 🙂

  1. Ocean Cleanser.  I love the consistency of this product (it feels like a gel) and the energizing, fresh scent!  It has a lime/orange/cyprus smell that makes you want to taste it, and leaves your skin looking glowy.  When I first got the Ocean Cleanser last year, I used to alternate it with the cleanser of a high end brand I had gotten at work… A year later, after seeing the difference in the way my skin looks after using each one, I totally cut out the other product.  I’m addicted!
  2. Atmosphere Protection Cream. This is one of my favorite products offered by Osea Malibu. I prefer to use a lightweight moisturizer for morning– that way, there is no risk of feeling greasy as the day goes on.  This one is truly PERFECT.  It not only moisturizes, but acts as a barrier protecting your skin from dry climate, wind, and pollution. After applying, my skin feels smoother and more supple– makeup goes on really well over this, too.
  3. Eye Gel Serum. Eye products especially need to be gentle and healthy for you, without harsh chemicals– the skin around your eyes is super thin and fragile, so it needs to be pampered and babied.  This gel is wonderful… it has a slight cooling effect when you apply it, which feels very soothing.  Your eyes immediately look better, with fine lines reduced and puffiness erased.

  1. (REPEAT) Osea Malibu Ocean Cleanser
  2. Advanced Protection Cream. I cannot live without this product. Recently, I went out of town and didn’t bring my night cream with me, and I could tell a noticeable difference in my skin (not in a good way) without it.  This cream contains plant-based DPHP, which is found in many anti-cellulite creams, and it REALLY works to take away your fine lines/wrinkles.  I am just over 30 years old, and am majorly into preventative care for my skin. I’ve also noticed that when I apply this cream, I wake up the next morning with a more even-looking skin tone… dark and blotchy spots don’t seem nearly as noticeable.
  3. Eyes and Lips.  This is another anti-aging must-have… And I love that its a “two-fer!” This product hydrates both the lip area AND the eye area: the first two places to show signs of aging.  This is a great product to pack when you go on vacation or to take with you in your handbag– Any sign of chapped lips or dry skin, just whip it out!

Occasional Add-Ins

  1. White Algae Mask.  While I’m sitting on the sofa blogging or doing an expense report for work, I like to pamper my skin with a high quality mask.  This one hydrates and evens out your skin, making it look luminous and glowy.  I’ve even slept in this one a couple of times… My skin looks amazing in the morning when I take it off!  Note: Osea Malibu makes some other great masks, too!  But this one is my fave, after trying all of them.
  2. Brightening Serum.  I’m going to keep it real with you.. THIS IS A MUST-HAVE FOR THE MORNING AFTER YOU’VE HAD A FEW DRINKS.  It will completely brighten you up and make you look like you went to bed at 8:30 the night before!  This serum is super lightweight, and has natural botanicals that bring radiance to your complexion.  Also:  I drive a lot for work, so I have some hyper-pigmentation (dark spots) on my left cheek from the sun shining on it through the window… This makes those spots all but disappear.

90’s flashback

If you were anything like me, you spent the majority of the 90’s on your inflatable furniture watching the ups and downs of Kelly Kapowski and Zack Morris, taking the occasional break to go eat some Gushers or tend to your Tamagotchi.   Oregon Trail, My So Called Life, and see-through land line phones also come to mind.   And what about the beauty products we used?  (Who can forget the simpler days of “Sun In,” long before we became resigned to our $100 trips to the salon?)  Are any of these magical products still around?  If so… Are ANY of them cruelty-free or vegan?   Let’s see, shall we:

Lip Smackers!  Did anyone else wear these on a string as a necklace?!  Fortunately, these guys are made by longtime cruelty-free (meaning no animal testing!) company Bonne Bell.  If you avoid beeswax, though, these are not for you.

Mane ‘N Tail!   I remember reading in my YM magazine about how I could use this stuff on my horse AND me.   I didn’t have a horse, but that didn’t deter me a bit.   As an adult, and before I went vegan/cruelty-free, I used and loved the deep moisturizing shampoos and conditioners and loved how shiny they made my hair look, AND how they were super super affordable at the grocery store.   I recently called Mane ‘N Tail’s customer service number to inquire about their policy on animal testing, and to find out which of their products were free of any animal-derived ingredients.   FYI,  they put it in writing for me that they do NOT test on animals under any circumstances, and these are their vegan offerings: Deep Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner; Gentle Clarifying Shampoo; Daily Control Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and 2-in-1.   I’ll take it!

Victoria’s Secret “Lovespell”!   To be honest, I reeked of this well into my sophomore year of college.   Boys seemed to LOVE its overly-sweet smell, and it came with me to every kegger.   While this product is still available, Victoria does indeed have a very dirty secret:   despite her claims otherwise, her products are tested on animals.   Bye!

Stila Lip Glaze!   Welp, I had these in just about every color (along with Juicy Tubes… remember those?)   I can still hear the “click click click” as I dispensed the color onto my lips, and I can still feel the annoyance of having my hair get stuck to my face should there be a gust of wind… Those were the best of times.   I am so sad to say, though, that Stila has only recently changed their animal-testing policy– and not for the better– in order to retail in China.   (It is mandated by Chinese government that companies conduct cruel animal testing before they allow their products on the shelves.)

Urban Decay Sparkling Lickable Body Powder!   Ok, so… Can we just take a moment to really soak in the NAME of this product?   Hi-larious.  I guess this was supposed to be sexy.   Not sure how hygienic the whole concept is– especially if you’re like me and decided to directly lick the puff– but, hey, I’m not here to judge:  if you still crave this product, you can find it on ebay, and it is in fact cruelty-free and vegan.   Go nuts!

Herbal Essences Shampoo!   What can we even say?   Anyone who was anyone used Herbal Essences.   What was the point of even having hair if it didn’t smell like a rose garden on steroids?   And those sexual commercials, though!   Here is the skinny on HE:  although it is advertised as NOT being tested on animals, it is a product owned by Clairol, who DOES make other products which are animal tested.  Looks like I won’t be ooh’ing and ahhh’ing in the shower again any time soon.

Sun In!   Pros:  This product is cruelty-free and vegan.   Cons: there is a 97-100% chance that you will end up with insanely patchy, bright orange hair.   I will never forget the time my mother picked me up from summer camp after I had borrowed half a bottle of my friend’s Sun In– her expression was a strange mixture of confusion and horror as I hung my blotchy neon head in shame.

the “bests” of the birthday week

So, I do not normally talk about this stuff on the blog…  But you guys, it has been a HECK of a year, and not in a good way (think: unexpected job transition, massively difficult breakup, and the devastating death of my little dog all at the same time).  It’s okkkk, we all hear that when it rains it pours, and I really do think that it’s normal to have an “off year” every now and again. Plus, I think that while it is important to let yourself feel sad, it is just as important to–at the same time–remember how good you have it compared to so many others out there.  Anyway, my point is– I just had a birthday, and my friends and family took it upon themselves to really “do it up” for me this time.  We ate, we drank, we were merry.  We had spa treatments, we fed our faces on rich desserts, and way too many gifts were given.  The past week has me feeling re-energized and hopeful for a fresh start.  As I sat here reflecting on the week of celebration, it occurred to me that I should share the highlights with you so that you can try them as well!  (Note: a few of these will be specific to Dallas, so for those of you who don’t live here… maybe its time to come make a trip out of it!)  Thanks for letting me open up a tiny bit … I hope that you feel encouraged if you, too, have had a less than stellar time lately. There are lots of “bests” in life to concentrate on, plus you have nowhere to go but UP! 🙂

You guys… TRUE FOOD KITCHEN has a VEGAN PINA COLADA!  Super sweet, but verrryyyy good if you’re celebrating something!  And if you’re there, be sure and get the lettuce cups and Andy’s TLT sandwich… You’ll be hooked on the whole experience.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

UNLEAVENED FRESH KITCHEN is brand new and soooo good, y’all!  Menu highlights:  Their hummus, the spicy avocado dip, the Farmstand wrap (specify that you want it vegan, not just vegetarian… It was seriously amazing) with a side of rice pilaf, and NO JOKE their coconut lime popsicle is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.  They have beer and wine, too.

I got a little gift in the mail from OSEA MALIBU, and I can honestly say that I am a new member of their considerable cult following.  Pictured here are my four very favorite products of theirs (listed in the order in which I apply them):  1)  Ocean Cleanser (I’m in love with the smell, and it leaves my skin feeling so refreshed); 2) White Algae Mask (anti-aging and skin brightening… I LOVE that you can leave it on for just 10 minutes, or overnight if you want to! You wake up, wash it off, and your skin looks incredible); 3) Brightening Serum (use to lighten age spots, sun spots, acne scars, freckles, uneven tone/blotchy skin); 4) Atmosphere Protection Cream (anti-aging, moisturizing, and protects your skin from environmental stressors). Osea’s products are cruelty-free (no animal testing) and vegan, all-natural, and organic. I was inspired and happy when I read this on their website:

“I want to leave this planet a cleaner place than when I arrived. (Like being a good house guest.) I also want women to be able to use the safest cosmetics possible. Remember 70% of what you put on your body can be absorbed into your bloodstream. I want to raise the consciousness of women so they use safe cosmetics, it’s not just about beauty – it’s about their health.”
– OSEA Founder Jenefer Palmer

My favorite thing about MINILUXE is the availability of 5-free (meaning, without all 5 dangerous chemicals commonly found in nail polish) vegan polishes!  Impeccable service, too, and located around some of Dallas’ best shopping.  Word to the wise: make an appointment; not very walk-in friendly because they are always so booked up! I went to the uptown dallas location, but these salons are found in Texas, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

I was invited by FIT N’ FANCY to try out their non-invasive Strawberry Laser treatment (typically $100 per treatment).  I must admit… I was skeptical.  But I looked it up online and saw that it is FDA approved and has been featured on Rachel Ray, Extra, and The Doctors… Plus I figured hey, why not.  Temps are rapidly rising (hello global warming) so clothes are getting sparser, and I wouldn’t be mad if I lost a couple of inches.  So I went to and visited Leah at her spot in Grapevine, and what I can tell you is this: She cares about what you want, about your lifestyle, about being truthful in regards to what your expectations should be, and she takes great pride in her work.  It went down like this: Leah took my measurements, then placed little paddles, bound by a strap, around my waist.  It was warm and I fell asleep 🙂 30 minutes later, I woke up and groggily removed my “belt.”  Keep in mind that I am pretty small to begin with, so any change in my size is very noticeable to me… But I swear, I could tell a difference immediately!  I know, it sounds hokey, but I would never lie to y’all.  We measured, and I lost a total (meaning, cumulatively from measurements around 3 different parts of my abdomen) of 3 inches.  I felt fine– no soreness or downtime or anything like that.  Things to remember: The FDA says that the inches lost are temporary, but with diet and exercise can be maintained; also, multiple sessions are recommended for optimal results. Leah (who is vegan-curious, so I had a ball chatting with her) also offers teeth whitening, hair removal, and more.

(photo cred: my super talented friend Mary Summers Hafner of So Then They Say)

QUILL is finally open, and it did NOT disappoint!  I felt like I was in New York, not Dallas, as I danced with my friends to old school hip hop among the older-world black and white + emerald decor, accented by brass. Go, go, go!

I hope you enjoyed my “Bests” list… Admittedly, it is a departure from my regular content (fashion, of course!), but let me know if you want me to keep these types of articles coming!
